Saint Louis University is a private teaching university in Baguio, Philippines, approximately 250 km north of Manila. SLU's main campus is on A Bonifacio Street where the six schools are housed while the Mary heights Academic Campus houses the School of Accountancy and Business Management and the Gonzaga Campus houses the schools of Law and Teacher Education.
In 1907, the CICM Missionaries arrived in the Philippines, mandated by the Holy See to evangelize the northern part of the country. Pretty soon, it became apparent that Baguio, then a small mountain village resort in the province of Benguet, around two hundred and fifty kilometers north of Manila, will be pivotal for the region. With an elevation of at least 1,500 meters above sea level, Baguio is a natural gateway to and from the Cordillera mountain range, which traverses the Mountain Provinces (Montañosa), the home of numerous indigenous tribes
Thus it was that in 1911, Rev Fr Séraphin Devesse, CICM, founded a one-room elementary school in Baguio for ten local boys. From these humble origins, Saint Louis School began.In 1915, the intermediate grades and a trade schoolwere started under the guidance of Fr. Florimond Carlu. In 1921, the highschool was inaugurated.In 1955, the graduate-level programs of Saint Louis College were granted recognition, but the real turning point came on 13 May 1963, when Saint Louis College was conferred University status by the Philippine Government.
From the one-room Saint Louis School for ten boys in 1911, Saint Louis University has grown to a four campus University with more than thirty buildings catering to more than thirty thousand students.
Saint Louis University was founded by Fr. Séraphin Devesse, a priest of the order of the Congregation Immaculate Cord is Marie (CICM), in 1911. For over a hundred years, SLU has essentially been and nurtured and molded by the CICM.
SLU as a CICM educational institution of higher learning is certainly an extension of the CICM mission. SLU must strive to be a source of Catholic education that reveals the fullness of human dignity in the light of divine revelation. That is why, to cite the CICM Constitution: “Those engaged in education must never forget that they themselves must be motivated with a deep apostolic spirit to bring their mission to a good end.”
SLU then strives to live out this missionary responsibility through the active integration of its core values of Christian living, academic excellence, creativity, and social involvement that certainly reflect the human aspiration of social well-being that underlies the CICM missionary objective.

The CICM fathers founded Saint Louis University because they believed she has a specific mission of educating the youth of the Cordillera region and of transforming the society through her educational apostolate. The CICM-Philippines province strongly desires that all its educational institutions should not only be more conscious of their role, but should work harder to fulfill their missionary task as an evangelizing and transforming agency in society. Such transformation could only take place however when these institutions like SLU are able to form the faculty, staff and students into professionals who are competent, creative, socially involved and who are imbued with the Christian spirit.
When SLU accepts the young to her care, it is with the intention to transform them into competent and creative professionals, i.e. workers who possess at their finger extensive knowledge, skills and attitudes relevant to their profession and who are able to create new knowledge through research and to invent new ways of responding to the many challenges of the modern world. Furthermore, it is her intention to form them into dedicated citizens who are imbued with a deep sense of faith, hope and charity expressed thru a life of genuine spirituality and committed service to those in most need, as well as thru intelligent and constructive involvement in social issues that confront modern society.

foreign students who wish to enroll in SLU should apply not later than 6 months before the start of the academic term, namely: June for the 1st semester, November for the 2nd semester, and April for summer term. Moreover, they should be in Baguio City at least 4 weeks before the start of classes of the academic term for them to take the SLU-CEE / Qualifying Examination and Personality Test. All incoming freshmen foreign students shall also undergo and pass the English Proficiency Test and Personality Test. Foreign students must secure a valid Student VISA
The Saint Louis University (SLU) Library was founded simultaneously with the founding of SLU as a college in 1952. It started as a one-classroom library but later expanded and occupied the lower western wing of the old college building, now known as the Gonzaga Building. It then had a collection of 12,000 volumes with a seating capacity of two hundred library users. The aims are to safeguard the necessary silence and atmosphere needed for research and profound study, and to make the collection grow to support the curriculum.
Today, the SLU Library has grown enormously into a massive building—Msgr. Charles Vath Library Building. Towering over the other buildings in the campus and resembling the big hearts of the early CICM Fathers and Sisters who envisioned in giving the people of the Cordilleras and Northern Luzon quality Catholic education, the library building now houses a varied collection of print, non-print, electronic and internet-based resources. The once one-classroom library has grown and now known as the SLU Libraries. Moreover, it now houses the Museum of Arts and the Culture and the Multimedia Library. The University Libraries’ aims have expanded according to the needs of a now complex curricula and demands of library users. With the ongoing computerization and reorganization, the SLU Libraries are set to meet the challenges of library preservation and conservation, automation, and collaboration and networking endeavor
